Program Abstract

The NIOSH Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation and Prevention Program conducts independent investigations of fire fighter line-of-duty deaths and reports its findings. Their reports are an excellent source of "lessons learned" for departments looking to improve their SOPs, training, response, and services. In this program, we look at four NIOSH reports on firefighter line-of-duty deaths that occurred while operating at a roadway incident and discuss how those types of incidents could be avoided in the future. Although the case studies in this program are about firefighter deaths, they contain lessons learned that will benefit any agency or department that responds to roadway incidents.
