Program Abstract

Weather events significantly impact roadway incident response. Weather has the potential to create a large-scale, mass casualty incident. Weather can also escalate a small event into a larger one. Inclement weather can increase the hazards and dangers responders encounter during response to a roadway incident. Weather is a significant factor in transportation planning and management but does not often get the same emphasis in emergency services planning and response until an event actually occurs. Whether the weather event is anticipated ahead of time or spontaneous, there are many things the emergency services can do to better prepare, plan, and execute response. This module spotlights how weather impacts emergency scenes on roadways and provides guidance for how to plan and respond when weather conditions significantly affect the incident.
