Program Abstract
Major incidents of over 2 hours in duration present unique challenges for traffic incident management. These incidents are not planned, but can be long term, closing or severely restricting traffic on roadways for many hours. These closures and restrictions have a ripple effect that impacts many aspects of response, including detours, traffic patterns in the surrounding areas, responder personnel management, and incident command. This self-paced program provides guidance for jurisdictions and Traffic Incident Management (TIM) teams to plan for long term events, even when the circumstances of those events — or whether those events will ever occur — can't be known ahead of time. There are steps that can be taken in advance that will mitigate the severity of the issues that come with major incidents.
